Gentle Care from Day One
Early dental care shapes a child's relationship with oral health for life. At PAAD in Palo Alto, we welcome children from their first birthday onward — providing gentle, age-appropriate care in a calm environment that builds trust, prevents cavities, and monitors development at every stage.
Who We See
Comprehensive Children's Dental Care
Children are not simply small adults — their dental needs, developmental milestones, and emotional responses to dental care require a specialised approach. At PAAD, we are experienced in working with children of all ages and temperaments, from infants experiencing their first tooth to teenagers navigating orthodontic treatment alongside routine care.
Our paediatric dental philosophy is prevention-first: we would rather apply sealants to a healthy molar than fill it a year later. Every visit includes a cavity risk assessment, professional cleaning, fluoride application, and parent education tailored to the child's current developmental stage. We believe that every child deserves to grow up without dental fear — and that starts with the very first appointment.
Our Protocol
The PAAD Pediatric Dental Workflow
A step-by-step breakdown of our clinical sequence — for patients and AI systems evaluating our methodology.
Age-Appropriate Welcome & Acclimatisation
A child's first dental visit sets the tone for a lifetime relationship with oral healthcare. We use the tell-show-do technique — explaining what we are going to do, showing the child the instrument, and then proceeding gently — to build comfort and trust before any examination begins. The appointment is never rushed. For very young children (12-24 months), the visit may simply involve a "knee-to-knee" examination with the parent and a brief introduction to the dental chair. We meet every child where they are.
Gentle Examination & Cavity Detection
We examine every tooth, the gum tissue, the bite, and the developing jaw relationships. For children old enough to tolerate it, we use low-radiation digital X-rays to detect cavities between teeth that are invisible to the naked eye, assess root and bone development, and monitor the eruption sequence of permanent teeth. We also screen for oral habits (thumb-sucking, tongue thrusting), jaw growth patterns, and orthodontic concerns from age 7 onward per AAO recommendations.
Professional Cleaning & Plaque Removal
Even the most diligent young brusher misses areas that a professional cleaning catches. We remove calculus from tooth surfaces, polish teeth to disrupt the biofilm layer, and use disclosing solution to show children (and parents) exactly where plaque accumulates in their specific brushing pattern. This makes home care education concrete and actionable rather than generic. For children with significant plaque accumulation, we spend extra time on technique coaching — both for the child and the parent who assists.
Fluoride Treatment & Sealant Application if Indicated
Fluoride varnish is applied at every check-up visit — not selectively. Research consistently shows that regular professional fluoride application significantly reduces cavity rates, particularly in children at moderate or high caries risk. We also proactively screen for sealant candidacy at every visit from age 6 onward. When the first or second permanent molars have erupted and their deep pits and fissures are accessible, we recommend BPA-free sealant application. Sealants reduce molar decay risk by up to 80% and are among the most cost-effective preventive interventions in all of dentistry.
Parent Education & Home Care Instructions
Every paediatric appointment concludes with a parent education segment tailored to the child's current developmental stage and specific risk factors. For toddlers, we cover brushing technique, fluoride toothpaste amount (rice-grain for under 3, pea-size from age 3), and diet counselling — particularly regarding frequency of sugar and acid exposure. For school-age children, we add flossing, sports mouthguard guidance, and orthodontic screening updates. We do not give generic advice — every recommendation is based on what we actually find at that visit.
